In a move that signals a positive technological shift in Indian agriculture, India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare issued an interim 2 year approval for drone-based spraying of most pesticides registered in India. There is already a standard operating procedure governing use of drones for the application of pesticides in agriculture, forestry and non-cropped areas.
Among the pesticides cleared for drone-based spraying are insecticides, fungicides, plant growth regulators (PGRs), biopesticides and botanical pesticides. The list includes 479 formulations containing single active ingredient as well as combination products. These have already undergone safety and efficacy evaluations and are already in use by farmers.
Drone-spraying is a cost-effective method of pesticide dissemination and is particularly beneficial for its low consumption of water. It reduces water consumption by as much as 95% as compared to traditional spraying of pesticides or insecticides. It reduces human contact with strong and possibly harmful chemicals and can be much faster than traditional methods.
